Our beneficiary The Miracle League of Alexandria and the ACDS Service Learning Program

Service learning at ACDS is a thoughtful program of investigation, planning, action and reflection that allows students and teachers to address authentic community needs while deepening their understanding of the world around them. Each grade chooses a theme for the year and begins with an “investigation” stage where they research community needs related to their theme. As they develop and implement their plans for action, the students share their learning with each other and the community at large. The 6th grade theme for the 2014-2015 school year focuses on therapeutic recreation. In addition to these thoughtful and comprehensive student-led projects, there is an all-school half-day of service in November and an all-school day of service in April, and we enjoy occasional opportunities for one-time community service projects as well.

The 6th graders have been learning about people who have both cognitive and physical disabilities. In order to develop hands-on experience, ACDS has partnered with a local organization, the Miracle League of Alexandria. The Miracle League is a softball league for youths and adults with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. The players are able to learn the basic skills of softball and have fun with their friends. The positive atmosphere is truly contagious.

The 6th graders have been volunteering with the students from the Miracle League in a variety of ways. They attended a softball game where they helped bat and field the balls, cheered on the runners, served as base coaches, and even got the chance to be softball announcers. On our half-day of service learning, the 6th graders went to the Lee Center in Alexandria, VA, where the players from the Miracle League go after school for services. There they learned about therapeutic recreation, took a tour of the center, played in the sensory room, and made “turkeys-in-a-blanket” for the students at the center. Some of our 6th grade students volunteered their time at the Chinquapin pool. They went swimming with the students, handed out snacks, and played recreational games. ACDS hopes to continue our relationship with the Miracle League through other volunteer opportunities.

A portion of the proceeds from the 5K will go directly to the Miracle League of Alexandria. ACDS has decided to sponsor the first ten runners who sign up that are affiliated with the Miracle League. In addition, every runner who is from the Miracle League will receive a metal of recognition that has been designed by the 6th grade students and made using our school’s 3D printer.
